The Presbytere is one of the buildings in New Orleans belonging to the Louisiana State Museum and anyone with a keen eye will see that it was designed to match the Cabildo, another one of New Orleans’ historic buidlings. The Presbytere was built on the site of a residence of Capuchin monks, and was originally called Casa Curial, or ‘Ecclesiastical House’.

Later, the building was used for commercial purposes, and then served as a courthouse. Now the Presbytere is one of the most fascinating museums in New Orleans giving insight into the history of resilience and celebration in Louisiana in two permanent exhibitions.

Things to see:

- Mardi Gras: It’s Carnival Time in Louisiana exhibit

- Living with Hurricanes: Katrina and Beyond exhibit

Fun Facts:

  • Although it was designed in 1791 to match the Cabildo located on the other side of St. Louis Cathedral, astute observers would notice that the Presbytere lacked a cuplola atop. The cupola had been missing since the New Orleans Hurricane of 1915. Ironically a second hurricane in 1998 caused damage resulting in a major restoration project to the Presybytere, with the cupola being replaced in 2005 - some 90 years later.
