Immerse yourself in an underwater paradise upon entering the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. See a world below the surface come alive and get a unique perspective on marine life and preservation through their top-notch exhibitions and educational shows.

This expansive, two-floor aquarium is an oasis of underwater ecosystems. Each exhibition hall is categorized by the region that the unique plant and animal life hail from. Explore the Gulf of Mexico, Great Maya Reef, Amazon Rainforest, Living in Water, Parakeet Pointe and the Mississippi River Gallery and discover new species that you never knew existed.

Submerge yourself (literally and figuratively) in the tanks by walking in the all-glass tunnels through a Caribbean Reef. Be bold and come nose-to-nose with apex predators like the Sand Tiger shark or the famously aggressive Piranha. If you really want that hands-on experience, plunge into the touch tank and feel the slimy backs of stingrays, seahorses and more.

Each exhibit at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas aims to combine an enjoyable day at the aquarium with a learning experience. Through interactive touch tanks, kids and adults alike will learn more about the seemingly-dangerous stingrays. At the Gulf of Mexico and Great Maya Reef tanks, discover ways that we can protect the endangered sea species.

As you journey through the complex, keep an eye out for sea turtles of all shapes and sizes. One of Audubon Aquarium of the Americas’ main initiatives is the Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue program. Each sea turtle that lives within the aquarium has been rehabilitated by the expert aquarium staff and will be re-released into their natural ecosystems.

At this New Orleans aquarium, you’re not just a visitor. You’ll become a part of the world that lies beneath the surface.

Special Exhibit: Washed Ashore: Art To Save The Sea is a special art exhibition that will be on display at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas through April 2019. Peruse larger-than-life sculptures of the aquarium’s most popular inhabitants. All of the art pieces are made of plastic pollution to call attention to the growing plastic pollution problem in our oceans.

Tips for visiting:

  • Check the aquarium’s daily schedule for movie showings and talks
  • Explore at your own pace. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here.
