Mardi Gras has been a longstanding tradition in New Orleans, among other places across the globe, that has been celebrated since the early 1700s. Mardi Gras, or ‘Fat Tuesday’, can be traced to medieval Europe and was brought over to present-day New Orleans by the French.

In its beginnings, Mardi Gras was celebrated with fancy balls and exclusive high-society events. As time continued on, it was molded into the event we know and love today: a parade and carnival-esque celebration of life. Mardi Gras participants would plan for months and months, designing and building extravagant floats, costumes, and masks to dawn for the event.

Fast forward a couple thousand years and its still as big of a deal as it once was. New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebration typically takes place on a Tuesday in March, complete with a seemingly infinite procession of top-notch floats, krewes (groups of Mardi Gras goers), and people dressed to the nines in colorful garb. If you can’t make it to New Orleans for the actual event – a trip to Mardi Gras World is the next best thing.

The party never stops at Mardi Gras World, because every day is Mardi Gras here. Step foot into the studio of famed float and costumer designer, Roy Kern, and disappear into a whole new world.

Kern is known for his influential and colorful designs that sparked a new era of Mardi Gras style. At his studio, you’ll be able to take a tour through some of his best work and see up-and-coming artists working on floats for the next celebration.

The Kern Studio produces over 500 floats a year and has been open since 1947. The studio’s artists have made parades for carnivals and festivals all over the world. They frequently travel abroad in search of new styles, influences, and ideas.

Since Mardi Gras is a huge part of New Orleans history, this tour is a great way to really delve into the story of the famed celebration. Your guide will take you all the way back to the 1700s and take the mask off of Mardi Gras.
